Tonight when I got home from work, I covered the floor with paper – well, partially – I ran out midway through, so tomorrow I’ll go buy more, but for now I’ve got a dropcloth helping protect the floor. With that done, I brought my ladder in and checked how level my ceiling is. Surprisingly, it’s not bad – there’s a bit of wobbliness, and it was definitely possible to find a low spot for each cabinet run, but the variation is less than an eighth of an inch. Having marked the low spot, I then measured down 3.25 inches from the ceiling at that point, and drew a level line on each side. Then I got to hacksaw my suspension rails into the correct lengths, brought them upstairs, and then had to go back and cut one a second time because I can’t add. Oops.

When my walls were open, I’d recorded where the studs were for future reference- well, now it’s the future, so across my level line, I marked where the studs were. Then I screwed the suspension rail to the studs with cabinet screws, making sure it was level as I went. The cabinets are hung on the rail with bolts that thread into the rail, so I put all the bolts into the rail. And then, well, I had both rails up, and all the bolts, and the cabinets were just sitting there, and it was only 9:30. So I kind of installed two of the cabinets. I’m waiting for help for the third one on that wall, just because it’s wider than the first two, and also it’s gotten late and I have to make a blog post. But I have two cabinets! They’re so exciting! The others are sitting on the floor below where they belong, waiting for their turn.

And as always, there are pictures!

Yay, progress!
