floor refinishing, day 10

Well, I have been informed by a good friend with impeccable taste that the faint lines showing on my floor impart “character.” I’m embracing this theory, since my floor guys came back this morning and told me the news… that bottom layer of linoleum? The one with the stars? Was cut in place, on the floor. So the lines that are showing now are actually cuts in the wood, and they’re too deep to sand out. So unless I replace the floor, I’ve got stars. Character.

Today’s shots – same views as yesterday, plus a shot of one of the stars (they’re hard to take pictures of… luckily, I suppose).

I may not have impeccable taste (probably far from it!), but I definitely think the stars add character. It gives the kitchen a sense of history and a unique conversation starter!

Aw, shucks. ;) Love it even more, to see the detail shot. Reminds me of a story… When I was in 3rd grade, my parents sent me to art classes at the Gertrude Herbert Institute in Augusta. One day each camp session, the docent for the house would take us through the rooms off-limits to tour groups. One of the ballrooms had this alcove with a window that appeared completely scratched up from six feet away. But when you examined it more closely, you could make out NAMES: when the home had hosted elegant balls around the 1850s, some of the ladies had etched their names into the glass to make sure the rings they’d been given held actual diamonds. How cool is that? So, start working on your story! xo

Thanks for all the reassuring comments, y’all – I will embrace my character-having floor! And maybe come up with a better story for why the stars exist…
